As a neon-loving, pattern-clashing beauty editor, I'm having a hard time accepting the "anti-nail art" trend that has taken over Hollywood. After watching nail art lovers like Zooey Deschanel, Katy Perry and Rihanna roll out decked-out digits on the red carpet, many celebrities are now returning to pared-down manicures with nude nail polishes.
This is due in large part to the beauty industry recognizing that "nude" is not confined to one color. Flesh-toned shades of beige, peach, taupe, caramel and chestnut (yes, there are finally more shades for dark-skinned girls!) have been recently formulated by Laura Mercier, Butter London, Jenna Hipp and RGB, just to name a few brands.
While nude nail polishes may be a bit too neutral for my scene-stealing style, there are a few advantages to wearing these basic colors.
"The everyday working woman depends on nudes to get her through the week, and in the event she can't make it to the nail salon, these colors provide the illusion that her nails are still intact," according to nail artist B. EZ for Bombe d'Ongles. "This is the most important aspect with clients that I've had."
And much like a pair of nude pumps, a nail color that matches your skin tone can create the same lengthening effect. Take note, short-nailed ladies!
