Bassist Kim Deal has quit the Pixies after 25 years. The band released a statement Friday confirming that Deal, who has been an on-again, off-again member of the highly influential rock outfit, had decided to part ways with the group.

Here's the band's full statement, via the Pixies' Facebook page:

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Rolling Stone notes that Deal first joined the act when she answered a 1986 ad the band had placed in the Boston Phoenix. During her early work with the group, she used the alias Mrs. John Murphy.

The timing of Deal's decision is slightly awkward, if only because the band just raised $234,450 in a Kickstarter campaign for a photobook on the band's history.
