After a five-hour standoff with LAPD SWAT officers, a man who allegedly killed his girlfriend was taken into custody Friday morning.

Police responded to a call reporting screaming and gunshots at about 12:30 a.m. in Porter Ranch, Calif., KTLA reports.

“I woke up … and I hear this screaming and yelling like a woman being tortured, like being stabbed,” a neighbor told CBS.

According to witnesses, the male suspect chased his girlfriend out of her home and then shot her in the road, ABC reports.

When police arrived, the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. The man barricaded himself in the house and, when he refused to come out, the LAPD called its SWAT team, the Los Angeles Times reports.

After about five hours, the man came out at 5:20 a.m. Shirtless and with a bloodied face, he was taken to a local hospital to be treated for what officials said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face, KTLA reports.

About 12 homes were evacuated during the standoff, NBC reports.

There were three children in the home when the shooting occurred, ABC reports. All three are safe and in police custody.
