The AARP's latest list of the best places to work for people over 50 includes some familiar names, like the National Institutes of Health (#1), Cornell University (#11) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (#14). But it also includes some names you may not be that familiar with, like Mountain States Health Alliance (#30), Perkins Cole LLP (#49) and CheapCaribbean.com (#50).
What they all have in common though is a desire to retain, retrain, engage and recruit mature workers.
“These best employers know that recruiting and retaining 50-plus workers is smart business," said Jean Setzfand, AARP's vice president for financial security, in a press release. "In short, they listen to the needs and wants of their older workers."
The announcement of the top 50 U.S.-based employers was made jointly June 17 by AARP and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), which is co-sponsoring the Best Employers program for the first time. SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management.
The National Institutes of Health, a federal agency based in Bethesda, Maryland, had finished third in the last Best Employers search in 2011, but this year succeeded Scripps Health of Southern California, which headed the list in 2011 and is runner up this year. (AARP did not do a list in 2012.)
According to this year's survey, NIH is known for its generous health benefits and a “Fit Plus Program” that strongly supports the needs of employees 50 and over who are beginning or maintaining a fitness program. And full-time employees are eligible to move to part-time work on a permanent or temporary basis.
