Engaged lesbian couple Amanda Ortiz and Rachel Murphy recently joined HuffPost Live to talk about their relationship.
The two met in high school and then joined the military together in 2010, while "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) was in place.
"We wrote each other letters every once in a while. We couldn't really communicate very much. We went to basic training at the same time. We couldn't speak about anything, of course -- it wasn't allowed," Ortiz told host Mike Sacks. Murphy added "Our letters were addressed Brian and Ryan."
The policy, which barred openly lesbian, gay, and bisexuals from serving in the military, was implemented in 1993 and repealed in 2011.
"Now that it's gone, it's so different," Murphy said. "There's so many more homosexuals in the military that are comfortable with coming to us and talking -- it's great."
