Chicago Flooding: Rain Closes Part Of Edens, Causes Widespread Delays & Road Closures

Heavy Rain Closes Part Of Edens, Causes Widespread Delays

Heavy rain early Wednesday morning was the culprit behind flash flooding in the northern Chicago area ahead of yet more storms that remain in the forecast for later in the day.

Flooding caused the Edens Expressway to close at Pratt Avenue around 7 a.m. Tuesday. According to the Chicago Tribune, northbound traffic was being diverted at Peterson Avenue, while southbound traffic was being diverted at Touhy Avenue.

Multiple Metra trains were also halted during the morning commute as some tracks were flooded by the more than 7 inches of rain that have fallen over the last 48 hours in some parts of Chicagoland, CBS Chicago reports. According to the Chicago Weather Center blog, the heaviest rain has been reported in McHenry County.

The northbound Belmont Avenue to Lake Shore Drive ramp was also flooded and closed around 8 a.m., DNAinfo Chicago reports.

Meanwhile, a flash flood warning is in effect through 11:30 a.m. for Cook, DuPage and Kane counties, according to ABC Chicago and most of the Chicago area is under a flash flood watch through 7 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect.

The Wednesday rain came on the heel of more stormy weather Tuesday that left thousands in the Chicago area without power -- some of whom were still without power Wednesday.

More showers and thunderstorms are expected later Wednesday. The storms could bring damaging winds, lightning and even hail through the evening hours, NBC Chicago reports.
