The Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act on Wednesday, with its ruling in United States v. Windsor.
In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the law, which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, was unconstitutional.
