It's been more than three years since she started dating sitcom writer and producer Linda Wallem, and now Melissa Etheridge is looking forward to "exercising my American civil liberties and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love," as she revealed on her Twitter account.
News of the 52-year-old rocker's engagement to Wallem broke earlier today in a CNN phone interview that took place shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Defense of Marriage Act "unconstitutional." The high court also overturned the constitutional amendment, Proposition 8, which was submitted by the state of California -- the place where Etheridge now intends to be wed.
"I'm going to get married in the state of California. I woke [the kids] up this morning telling them the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA. I love everybody out there. It's a great day," she said before adding, "Love is love and America is beautiful. It's just an amazing, amazing day. I'm proud to be an American."
