Dictators, Punk Rock And Sex: A Conversation With Pedro Almodovar

Pedro Almodovar On Dictators, Punk Rock And Sex

In Pedro Almodovar's iconic film All About My Mother, a transgender woman named La Agrado takes the stage and begins a monologue about authenticity by listing the surgeries she's undergone:

"Almond-shaped eyes, 80 thousand; silicone in lips, forehead, cheeks, hips and ass — the liter costs 60 thousand pesetas; you add it up, because I stopped counting. Tits? Two. I'm no monster. Seventy each, but these have been fully depreciated. Well, as I was saying, it costs a lot to be authentic, ma'am. And one can't be stingy with these things, because you are more authentic the more you resemble what you've always dreamed of being."

This week on Alt.Latino, the Spanish filmmaker stops by to discuss, among other things, authenticity — and keeping true to his artistic vision, despite having come of age as an artist during an almost impossibly repressive time in Spain.
