To me, the '80s were about neutrals, black laminate furnishings and mirrors. The lingering scent of Aqua Net. Faux leather. Pointless wallpaper borders. It was a time when there was no such thing as "bad taste." It was a time of dried floral arrangements and the fake English manor look. It was the time of "Dynasty."
But to visitors of the 1956 Ideal Home Exhibition in London, it was a time that was far, far off into the future. And it turns out that people in the '50s thought the '80s would be all about...
Plastic.
It could also be fiberglass, but who knows. This vanity reminds me of this computer from Jem:
But the vision of the 1980s, below, offers a more troubling vision of the decade.
If the faux paneling didn't upset you, the idea of sweater unitards for adults (with matching ballet slippers) will.
So while the '80s were pretty tacky...
...now we now know that it could have been much worse.
