Beloved Latin American TV character “El Chavo” is coming to the U.S. and he’s bringing his friends.

Toymaker JAKKS Pacific recently announced it would be launching a line of “El Chavo” toys that will be available in the U.S. in August. The line of dolls will include an 18-inch talking "Chavo" doll along with plush dolls of his friends "Quico" and "Popis."

“It is clear to us that 'El Chavo' resonates with Latinos as a reminder of their roots and has transcended generations as a reflection of their cultural heritage. We look forward to bringing 'El Chavo' toys to millions of kids across the U.S.” said Stephen Berman, President and CEO of JAKKS Pacific, Inc.

Created by Roberto Gómez Bolaños, the television family show “El Chavo del Ocho” debuted in 1973 and aired new episodes until 1980. Since then it has been repurposed and has aired reruns in over 90 countries. The series focuses on "El Chavo," an orphan who hangs out in a barrel and his group of friends who include "Quico" and "La Chilindrina."

“I think it’s very exciting and fair to all those Latinos in the United States, they can have some part of home close to them, something that belongs to them and that they can identify with Latin America,” said Bolaños’ daughter Paulina Gomez Fernandez. “‘El Chavo’ is not just a Mexican icon, he’s a Latin American icon."
