The Fourth of July is just a few days away. Family cookouts and fireworks with friends are fun, but maybe you and your love are looking to celebrate our country's birthday in a more, well, private way.

There's no need to break the bank or hop on a plane for a romantic weekend getaway with your partner. There are plenty of fun, stress-free destinations just a car ride away.

YourTango.com’s "Love On The Road" survey with Ford proved that road trips lead to serious bonding time. In fact, 90 percent of couples who have taken a road trip together say it strengthened their relationship.

We've found some romantic spots for a fabulous Fourth of July weekend trip to bring you two closer, whether you live in New England or on the west coast.

San Luis Opisbo, California

San Luis Obispo, on California's central coast, is an unexpected foodie haven full of adorable B&Bs and college-town charm. Go for an olive oil tasting at Olea Farm and have fancy appetizers at the bar at Koberl at Blue.

If you're into history, the Old Mission is a must-see, as is the quirky "Bubble Gum Alley" -- an alley filled with decades of old bubble gum!

For sleeping, book a room at Apple Farm or the amazing Madonna Inn, where each of the 110 rooms is decorated in a different theme.

Asheville, North Carolina

The smoky, misty mountains of North Carolina are the perfect setting for a laid-back lover's weekend. Take in the Gilded Age glory of the stately home Biltmore and take a scenic train journey on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

With more breweries per capita than any other city in the country, Asheville is ideal if you're a beer lover. Drink up at the Belgian style Thirsty Monk then sweat out your hangovers the next morning at Sola, a therapeutic salt cave that also offers spa services. Book a couples' massage to make it extra special!

Michigan's Old Mission Peninsula

Gorgeous views and independent wineries galore greet you on Michigan's Old Mission Peninsula in the northwest part of the state. Rent a private cottage or stay at a B&B, but either way you've got to see the views from The Boathouse restaurant (right along the water).

If you and your partner are active types, you can waterski, sail or kayak in Grand Traverse Bay, and end the day with a great bottle of local Pinot Grigio.

Omaha, Nebraska

"The Heart Of The Midwest" has plenty to do for museum-goers and music-lovers alike. Saddle Creek Records (label of The Postal Service, Bright Eyes, and others) is headquartered here, so there's a great music scene, not to mention lots of great galleries (try Artists’ Cooperative Gallery). Watch the sunset hand-in-hand from the surprisingly lovely new riverwalk and finish with a steak at the Omaha Steakhouse restaurant.

Southern New Mexico

Think Santa Fe and Taos are all New Mexico has to offer? Think again! Take a weekend trip to southern New Mexico, the land of Billy the Kid. Base your getaway in Las Cruces, the second biggest city in the state and stroll the romantic historic plaza. Watch the sun set over the gypsum sands, go hiking in the majestic Organ mountains, and eat as much green chile as you want at the many mom-and-pop Mexican restaurants.

We highly recommend a day trip to Truth or Consequences, an artsy hippie town where you can soak away your cares in the town's many hot springs (clothing optional and private soaking spaces are available!)

The Eastern Shore Of Maryland

Maryland's Eastern Shore is one of the prettiest and most unique places on the East Coast. Home to farmers and watermen, this rural part of Maryland is the ultimate spot if you and your love are fans of seafood, especially crab.

Stay at the historic Combsberry Inn Bed & Breakfast in Oxford, shop in quaint St. Michaels and take in a show at the gorgeous, fully-restored Avalon Theatre in Easton.

Rockport, Massachusetts

Just an hour's drive from Boston, the village of Rockport, Massachusetts is home to beautiful beaches, historic lighthouses and plenty of ocean activities, from sailing to deep sea fishing.

Be sure to strike a pose with your partner in front of Motif No. 1. The historical fishing shack is America's most-painted building.

Stay at Emerson Inn by the Sea, a romantic B&B overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

To celebrate Independence Day, cozy up to your love at a bonfire on Back Beach or let the sparks fly as you watch fireworks together over Gloucester Harbor.
