Egypt's Crisis Of Legitimacy: HuffPost Live Discusses The Crisis In Cairo (VIDEO)

WATCH: Morsi's Fatal Mistake

Just two years after millions took to the streets and toppled Hosni Mubarak, an unprecedented number of Egyptians filled the streets on June 30 to call for the resignation of president Mohammed Morsi. Egypt's military gave the president a 48-hour ultimatum, eventually removing the Islamist leader from power on Wednesday. Dozens have been killed in clashes since then, as the military rounded up and arrested hundreds of members of the Muslim Brotherhood while simultaneously trying to establish an interim government. Violence peaked on Monday, as at least 51 Morsi-supporters were killed in clashes with the army near the military's headquarters.

Sharif Kouddous, Shadi Hamid and Heba Morayef joined HuffPost Live host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin to discuss the crisis.

"This wasn't a conspiracy just against Morsi. This was massive popular discontent that no single political force could have orchestrated," says Morayef, Human Rights Watch director for Egypt. "Morsi's fatal mistake was to not recognize the crisis of June 30 for what it was and that was a crisis of legitimacy."
