How To Render Lard (VIDEO)

We'd do anything for a flakey crust.

There aren't many home cooks who would be willing, let alone excited, to render their own lard. It's one of those cooking projects that seems just a little too involved to get into. Thankfully, food blogger Not Without Salt is not one of those people. She excitedly is rendering her own lard, and she may have convinced us to do it, too.

All we needed to hear to get us on the rendering-lard bandwagon were three little words: perfect pie crust. Apparently, lard makes pie crust even better. We love pie a whole lot, and if rendering lard is something that needs to happen to improve our pie crust, well then it's definitely worth it. No question.

It turns out that rendering your own lard is not as hard as it sounds -- so long as you have access to pig fat. Watch the video above to see how it's done and visit Not Without Salt for further instructions.
