Torii Hunter Gives Reporters An Eyeful, Says 'Game Polices Itself' After Sale Nearly Hits Fielder (VIDEO)

"Where words are restrained, the eyes often talk a great deal." --Samuel Richardson

Following the Chicago White Sox contentious 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon, Torii Hunter gave a postgame interview every bit as compelling as the benches-clearing incident that preceded it. The matinee matchup at Comerica Park heated up in the fifth inning after Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera took Sox pitcher Chris Sale deep. With Prince Fielder following Cabrera to the plate, Sale's next pitch was a high-and-tight 94-mph fastball. In an apparent act of retaliation, Tigers reliever Luke Putkonen plunked Alexei Ramirez in the sixth. The benches cleared, Putkonen was tossed and Jim Leyland was sent to go meet him in the clubhouse.

Asked about the pair of inside pitches, the ensuing ejections and the animosity between the AL Central clubs after the game, Hunter chose his words carefully. He also glared and rolled his eyes with even greater intent. The 17-year veteran handled the initial questions posed by reporters with series of high-pitched "ehhhh" replies. After each emphatic "ehhh," he delivered a follow-up message not as likely to be transcribed but far more telling.

In between his monosyllabic utterances, a "hot tamale" mention and a random query about a ringing phone somewhere in the clubhouse, Hunter did provide the media scrum with a few complete sentences.

"It's tough. You guys got tough questions today," Hunter began. "It's something we try to stay away from. We just play the game. The game polices itself. That's all I got to say."

That brief statement may have been all Hunter had to say to reporters but thankfully it wasn't all that he communicated.

And of course, here's the interview in Vine form.
