The New Jersey Devils have lost Ilya Kovalchuk to retirement just three seasons into a massive 15-year deal.

Jeremy Roenick does not approve.

The former NHL All-Star and current NBC Sports hockey analyst took to Twitter on Thursday to air his grievances over the Russian's recent departure from the NHL.

Studiest thing iv heard since Aaron Hernandez .. Kovalchuk retiring !!! Is he out of his mind??? Something is fishy

Uwill all see now why I have talked negatively about kovalchuk !!! He doesn't want to play for the devils and he'll end up in the KHL!!!

— Jeremy Roenick (@Jeremy_Roenick) July 11, 2013

Kovalchuk is as selfish as they come!!!! I'm appalled. I feel bad for all u devils fans. U deserve better than that!!

I am shocked that kovalchuk would do this to the devils and their fan base!!! Devils lose so much w this decision it's scary!!! Selfish !!!!

I'm so irate right now. I feel bad for Lou lamoriello. Gave a 100 million dollar contract to a player who has no care for the NHL!

Hey Ilya hope u live comfortably in Russia w the money u made from the 23 million u stole from the devils Again I'm right in my analysis

Roenick has had his share of controversy both on and off the ice. In 2006, he was involved in a gambling scandal as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. He was later criticized as an analyst after publicly calling out Patrick Marleau, a former teammate, in 2011.

Kovalchuk's decision to return to Russia will cost the Devils a first round draft pick in 2014, as well as $250,000 for the next twelve seasons under the new collective bargaining agreement, according to Sports On Earth.
