WASHINGTON -- Gun activist Adam Kokesh, arrested last week in connection with a video showing him loading a shotgun just blocks from the White House while calling for the “final American Revolution," has been prohibited from possessing guns for the duration of his legal case.
WJLA reports that Kokesh has been ordered released on $5000 bond by a Fairfax County judge and is likely to be released from jail on Monday afternoon.
A preliminary hearing will be held on Oct. 2 according to NBC Washington, which reports that it's not yet clear if Kokesh has an attorney.
Kokesh has been charged with possession of a Schedule I or II drug, and possession of a Schedule I or II drug while in possession of a firearm, according to NBC Washington. Hallucinogenic mushrooms were found when police came to Kokesh's home -- in Reston, Va., about 20 miles from D.C. -- last week in what some supporters have described as "not a valid search."
Last week, Kokesh told The Huffington Post that he is calling for the "orderly dissolution of the federal government."
"The Final American Revolution is the people who see that our current form of government is unsustainable," Kokesh said by email. "We have succeeded in fundamentally changing the conversation around people's relationship to government. We plan to continue by marching on D.C. next Independence Day."
Kokesh organized, then scrapped, a march on Washington for this July 4th, during which demonstrators would carry loaded weapons from Virginia into the District, where it is illegal to carry guns.
That march was supplanted by a march on July 3rd during which Second Amendment supporters carried toy guns from Arlington National Cemetery to the National Mall -- there they held a water gun fight and made a donation to Toys for Tots.
A petition on the White House's "We The People" online platform calls for all charges to be dropped against Kokesh. As of Monday just before noon, almost 500 people had joined this request.
