Trayvon Martin Rally At City Park Held In Support Of Slain Teen

The acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin sparked protests across the nation as well as in Denver on Sunday.

Hundreds of people -- organizers claimed around 1,500 -- showed up at Denver's City Park on Sunday for a peaceful "Justice for Trayvon" rally wearing t-shirts and holding signs in support of the slain Florida teen who was shot to death by Zimmerman and in protest of a Saturday verdict that found Zimmerman not guilty of any crime in the shooting.

“A lot of us feel right in our gut, if Trayvon had not been a black man he would still be alive today,” rally organizer Jeff Fard said to CBS4.

KDVR reports that Fard collected more than $1,600 at the rally that would be given to Martin's family in support of a civil suit.

The Denver Post posted video of the Martin rally in Denver on Sunday:

On Saturday, a jury found former neighborhood watchman Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter in the shooting death of Martin. Zimmerman said that he shot Martin in self-defense claiming that the unarmed 17-year-old attacked him.

The Department of Justice announced that they are looking into the shooting death of Trayvon Martin to determine whether federal prosecutors should file civil criminal rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted. "Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation," government officials said to The Associated Press.

Zimmerman will get his gun back following his acquittal and his attorney Mark O'Mara told ABC News that he needs it "even more" than before. "There are a lot of people out there who actually hate him, though they shouldn't," O'Mara said.
