WASHINGTON -- A shirtless man arrested on Tuesday near the White House with a loaded handgun and two knives told officers he was, according to court documents, “only going to fire a couple of shots if no one confronted me,” NBC4 Washington reports.

Briggs, who is from Texas, was arrested in Layayette Park, just north of the White House. WUSA9 reports that the charges immediately brought against him after the arrest include carrying a pistol without a license, two counts of possession of prohibited weapons, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition and possession of an unopened alcohol container.

Update, July 19, 6:08 p.m.: Online D.C. Superior Court records show that Briggs was found competent to stand trial at a felony status conference on Friday and that he is being held without bond until his next court date. Another court date has been scheduled for August 13.
