Man Charged With Beating Pregnant Girlfriend, Killing Unborn Baby

A Chicago man was charged Thursday with assaulting his pregnant girlfriend who miscarried her nearly full-term baby as a result of the attack.

Jovanny Martinez, 23, of the Back of the Yards neighborhood, was charged with homicide of an unborn child, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery of a pregnant victim, all felonies, and ordered held in lieu of $700,000 bond, DNAinfo Chicago reports.

The beating happened on July 8, when the female victim was attacked by a group of several women and one man and struck multiple times on her arms and stomach in the 4800 block of South Laflin Street around 11 p.m. An autopsy of the stillborn baby girl the victim delivered at an area hospital the day after the attack revealed her cause of death to be "maternal assault." The girl was reportedly 32 weeks along in development.

Martinez was arrested Tuesday in the beating, according to NBC Chicago. He was charged after his girlfriend, with whom he lived, identified him.

Police have labeled the attack as gang-related, CBS Chicago reports.
