'MasterChef': Minor Ingredient Switch Turns The Competition On Its Head (VIDEO)

'MasterChef': Ingredient Shift Turns Everything Around

Former NFL player, Eddie Jackson, flipped the competition this week on "MasterChef." He came out of nowhere, surprising everyone with his mystery box challenge win. That gave him the power to choose which competitors got to cook with fresh mushrooms in the elimination test, and who was stuck with canned mushrooms.

He was very shrewd in his choosing, impressing judge Joe Bastianich. In particular, his choices left former standouts Jordan Roots and Bethy Rossos reeling.

"What was your strategy, giving Jordan the fresh mushrooms?" Bastianich asked him.

“Fresh mushrooms, you don’t have to do much to it," said Eddie. "I thought Jordan would overthink it, and try to do too much.” He was exactly right.

“Eddie has taken two front-runners and brought them to their knees," marveled Joe Bastianich. "I mean, it’s kind of amazing.” Buddy TV was amazed, too, that such a simple switch could totally turn the tables, knocking both women off their games.

In the end, it was time to say goodbye for Bethy, though Bastianch did tell her that if he had an opening at a restaurant, he'd hire her immediately. That said, last year's winner, Christine Ha, wrote for TV Guide that she didn't really understand his comment.

The Top 8 compete as "MasterChef" continues, Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
