Alkapone Cruz-Balles, Hawaii Man, Charged In Big Island Car Jacking

Criminal Mastermind? Not So Fast, Alkapone Cruz-Balles

Either this suspect was trying to live up to his name, or he desperately wanted it changed to a number.

Alkapone Cruz-Balles, a 19-year-old homeless man, has been charged in a Hawaii carjacking.

Police say Cruz-Balles threatened a 24-year-old man with a weapon in the parking lot of a Target in Hilo on Wednesday. He allegedly took the keys to the man's Hyundai and drove off, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The victim was not harmed.

It doesn't take a criminal mastermind to understand that highjacking a car on an island won't get you far.

According to Big Island Now, Hawaii police issued an island-wide alert, and the suspect was soon apprehended near his former address in Puna. A 14-year-old female who was with Cruz-Balles was questioned by police and then released into her parents' custody.

Cruz-Balles faces charges of first-degree robbery and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. He was held on $12,000 bail.
