Debbie Wasserman Schultz Encourages Bob Filner To Resign

DNC Chair: Filner Has To Go

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), chair of the Democratic National Committee, released a statement on Friday encouraging San Diego Mayor Bob Filner (D) to resign.

Wasserman Schultz's statement comes as allegations that Filner sexually harassed women continue to surface. She called his alleged behavior "reprehensible":

The misconduct Mayor Bob Filner has been accused of is reprehensible and indefensible. I am personally offended by his actions and I firmly believe no employee should face a hostile environment or harassment at their place of employment. There is no place for this type of conduct in the workplace and certainly not in our city halls and public offices.

For the good of the City of San Diego, I call on Mayor Filner to resign.

Schultz isn't the first Democrat to voice concerns over the recent allegations. The Democratic Party Central Committee of San Diego County met on Thursday to determine how it should respond to the situation. In a 34-6 vote, the committee decided to urge the embattled mayor to step down.

"We are not here to determine guilt or innocence," said Francine Busby, chairwoman of the county party committee. "However, in the best interest of the city, the San Diego County Democratic Party has voted to ask Mayor Filner to step down, seek the personal help that he needs, and allow San Diego to move forward."
