Starz Renews Michael Bay's 'Black Sails' Before It Even Airs

Michael Bay's New Pirate Series Renews Before It Aired

Starz has renewed the upcoming Michael Bay pirate drama "Black Sails" for a second season before the first season even premiered, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht announced on Friday at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour.

"These shows are massive undertakings and us making the decision now gives the executive producers [Bay and Jon Steinberg] all the time they need to prepare to shoot the second season," Albrecht said.

The eight-episode first season of "Black Sails," which follows the adventures of Captain Flint and takes place 20 years before the events of "Treasure Island," arrives on Starz in January 2014. Check out a trailer for "Black Sails" below:

Starz also announced that the BBC miniseries "Dancing on the Edge" will air on Starz in the fall. Other 2014 fare includes 50 Cent's "Power"; an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander"; "Fortitude," written by Simon Donald, the creator of the original "Low Winter Sun"; and the second season of "DaVinci's Demons."

"Spartacus" fans should note that Albrecht also said that "Incursion," the sci-fi military drama from "Spartacus" creator Steven DeKnight, is not dead, even though it's been in development for well over a year.

"I think we've realized how challenging it is from a production standpoint," Albrecht said. "It's very much alive, but it's on a slow pause, just because we can't go forward with a pilot that would not be affordable."
