'This Is For Trayvon Martin': D.C. Police Say Attack Is Being Investigated As Hate Crime

Attackers Told Victim 'This Is For Trayvon Martin': Police

WASHINGTON -- Three men who kicked and robbed another man early Saturday morning told their victim "This is for Trayvon Martin," according to D.C. police.

According to the Washington Post, before three black men threw their white victim to the ground and kicked him, then stole his wallet and iPhone, they invoked 17-year-old Martin, killed in 2012 by George Zimmerman, who was recently found not guilty for the shooting death.

The attack took place in Adams Morgan, a bar-filled neighborhood in D.C.'s Northwest quadrant. D.C. police spokesman Araz Alali told WTOP that the "community is absolutely safe and there's no pattern to these type of crimes."

According to WJLA, the victim had minor injuries and refused treatment.

Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
