Country Living's 2013 House Of The Year was planned as normal: a tour of a gorgeous show house. But while the magazine was prepping for the feature, Hurricane Sandy struck. The team decided to forgo their traditional approach and help Breezy Point, New York bungalow owner Marian Lizzi, whose home was practically destroyed from the storm.
After Hurricane Sandy, Lizzi's home was soaked in nearly three feet of water which ruined everything from the furniture to its structure. So HGTV designer Emily Henderson, construction company Deary Construction and their teams stepped in to restore it.
Henderson went with a classic beach theme and used bright white paint for the ceilings and trimmings to create a really open and airy vibe. She also wanted to bring out Lizzi's fun and happy personality that the storm had put a damper on. Little touches like a cool hammock in the living room and mix and matched metals in the kitchen give this place fantastic energy.
And although the team could never replace Lizzi's personal treasures that were lost by rebuilding her home, they helped her rebuild her life.
