Andrea Mitchell celebrated her 35 year anniversary with NBC News on Wednesday.

The MSNBC host was surprised with an on-air phone call from Tom Brokaw, who congratulated her and celebrated her decades-long career at the network.

In addition to hosting an hourlong program on MSNBC, Mitchell serves as NBC News' chief foreign affairs correspondent. She authored "Talking Back," a memoir that chronicles her journey as one of the first women to cover five presidents, Congress and foreign policy. She rose through the ranks of NBC News after starting in 1978, serving as a correspondent and analyst on nearly all of NBC News' properties.

"I can't tell you what it means to me—the colleagues, friends, teammates at NBC News from the very top and all the way around the world," Mitchell said. As Mitchell tossed to Tamron Hall, the MSNBC anchor yelled "Congratulations!"

"You're a hero and an inspiration to all of us," Hall said. "Especially us ladies."

Many of Mitchell's friends and colleagues took to Twitter to congratulate the longtime reporter.
