Dr. Susan Engel, Development Psychologist, On How To Raise A Happy And Healthy Child (VIDEO)

WATCH: The Secret To Raising A Happy And Healthy Child

The key to raising successful kids? Depends on how you define "success," says author and leading development psychologist, Dr. Susan Engel.

At the Aspen Ideas Festival in June, Engel talked to HuffPost Live about the mistakes parents make while raising their children.

"Part of it is the idea that if they just do everything right, they can make their child exactly what they want them to be," she said, "And part of it is the idea that what they want them to be is highly successful, in what I consider to be somewhat outdated or useless notions of what success is."

Engel explained that the secret to having a happy, healthy child largely involves letting go and recognizing him or her as an independent person.

Engel first popularized the idea in a 2011 New York Times op-ed titled, "Let Kids Rule the School," in which she followed a group of eight public high school students who developed their own curriculum and ended up learning more than they ever had in a traditional classroom.

When asked her thoughts on HuffPost's Third Metric, Engel responded, "I realized that success has to do with finding some sense of meaning and purpose in life, some sense of joy and some sense of personal connection."
