Former NBC News Host Joining Al Jazeera America

John Seigenthaler, a former NBC News host, will anchor primetime news on Al Jazeera America.

The fledgling network made the announcement on Thursday. Seigenthaler, who is currently the CEO of his family business Seigenthaler Public Relations-New York, worked at NBC News for over 11 years. He hosted the weekend edition of "NBC Nightly News" for nine years.

"I'm proud to join a respected worldwide news organization that is committed to delivering high quality, objective and balanced investigative journalism," he said in a statement. “While other networks and newspapers are cutting back, Aljazeera is growing. It’s exciting to be part of the launch of this unique cable news channel.”

Meanwhile, David Doss, Al Jazeera America’s senior vice president for news programming, praised Seigenthaler's "extensive experience in journalism." Seigenthaler is the latest hire announced by the channel, which will launch August 20. It also struck deals with Ali Velshi, Soledad O'Brien and Joie Chen among others, and finalized its programming in recent months.
