Spike Jonze's 'Her' Announced As Closing Night Film At New York Film Festival

Surprise Film Chosen For New York Film Festival Closing Night

Spike Jonze's "Her" will have its world premiere as the closing night film at this year's New York Film Festival. Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and the voice of Scarlett Johansson star in "Her," which had its trailer debut on Wednesday.

"Like many people I've come to expect great and surprising things from Spike Jonze, but 'Her' is something altogether new in cinema," Kent Jones, New York Film Festival's director of programming and the fest's selection committee chair, said in a press release announcing the premiere. "To discuss even a little bit of the plot –- let's just say that it's about lonely people and artificial intelligence –- is to deprive first-time viewers of the opportunity of discovering it themselves. The tone is magical, the freedom of the narrative is breathtaking, Joaquin Phoenix continues to be one of the most adventurous actors in movies, Rooney Mara and Amy Adams are unforgettable, Scarlett Johansson's voice will break your heart, and so will this impossibly delicate, funny, daring movie."

"Her" joins an increasingly hefty New York Film Festival lineup: Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips" will open the festival, while Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" will premiere at the NYFF Centerpiece Gala. Last year, Robert Zemeckis' "Flight" closed the New York Film Festival.

The New York Film Festival runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 13.
