A man who initially survived an attempted murder-suicide that left his estranged wife and their 5-year-old daughter dead in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood has died.
Juan Eguez, 28, was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Sun-Times reports.
Officers responded to the shooting in the 2800 block of South Kildare Avenue around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, and found 5-year-old Carla Eguez and her 28-year-old mother Kelly Coca dead inside their home, DNAinfo Chicago reports.
Police say the mother and daughter were both shot in the head, while Eguez was inside with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. According to NBC Chicago, Eguez was alive when officers responded to the scene and he was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.
At the scene, the Tribune reports a police officer emerged from the basement, crying, as relatives who also lived in the building awaited more information. Coca's younger sister reportedly heard muffled shots from the basement of the building, prompting her to call police.
Relatives told ABC Chicago Eguez lived in Miami and had prior military service as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. The couple was reportedly separated for years but not divorced.
Claudio Cossio, Coca's nephew, told DNAinfo the estranged husband had a history of violence in the relationship.
"[Eguez] was kind of crazy," Cossio said. "Last time I met him, he attacked one of my family members, and we had to call police."
Relatives say Carla went to visit her father as part of a joint custody agreement earlier this summer and had only just returned Sunday. The Tribune reports relatives were unaware Eguez had traveled to Chicago overnight.
Neighbors told NBC, "Everybody knows that family. They're always out front having a good time. They go to church right here in the next block. Everybody knows them." Speaking of 5-year-old Carla, a neighbor lamented, "She's innocent. If [the parents] had problems that's between them, she was innocent."
