Florida 7-Year-Old Finds Napping Bear On Family's Back Patio (VIDEO)

A 7-year-old boy was left thunderstruck this week after a bear wandered into his family's Florida home and settled down to take a nap in the shade of their back patio.

The AP reports that the boy was at his Naples, Fla., home with his babysitter when they spotted the sleeping bear.

"Sleeping OMG," the boy texted his mother, according to the AP. "What do we do?"

The mom, Alice MacDonough, immediately rushed home after receiving her son's frantic texts. "I've seen a bear at the zoo, but not even that close," she told NBC-2. "This is the closest I've ever come to a bear let alone a seven or eight feet bear sitting on my back porch."

The bear reportedly spent an hour on the family's lanai, yawning, lounging and sleeping, before leaving the enclosed area through a hole it created in a screened door. State bear experts have called the animal's behavior "unprecedented."

The napping animal caused no harm to the MacDonough family, but officials at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say the bear's lengthy stay at the family's home is troubling. According to NBC-2, a trap has been laid for the animal -- which has apparently become very accustomed to humans -- and it will be put down.

Though bears don't usually wander into homes a la "Goldilocks," this wasn't the first time that an adventuresome ursine has been found in a house.

Just last month, a bear was spotted roaming around a vacant home in Bradbury, Calif. According to CBS Los Angeles, the large animal (estimated to weigh between 250 and 300 pounds) is believed to have been sick or injured.

In 2011, a Cablevision technician in New Jersey got a surprise of a lifetime when he stumbled upon a sleeping black bear in the home of a client. The animal was later tranquilized by New Jersey Fish and Game officials, NBC New York reported at the time.
