A home defeat to Aston Villa in the season-opening fixture is not what Arsene Wenger needed.

Coming off another summer bereft of impact signings, the Arsenal boss was on unsteady ground as he returned to the Emirates for the 2013-2014 campaign. After two goals by Villa striker Christian Benteke helped sink Wenger's side in a 3-1 defeat, his situation may have gone from precarious to perilous. With noted Gunners fan Piers Morgan leading the charge, #WengerOut became a trending term on social media on Saturday.

After the loss got Arsenal's season off on the wrong foot, an apologetic Wenger addressed the lack of signings after the team's reported pursuits of players such as Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Bernard.

“We are trying to buy players and if we find the right players we will do it. I am not the only one working on that [at this club]," Wenger said, via ESPN FC. "It’s not my money, it’s the money of the club and we are ready to spend it on the right players. I also believe we could have won the match with the players we had on the pitch today, but it didn’t happen.”

As the fans noted, it did not happen. It could be a long season in North London -- although perhaps not for Wenger, according to Ladbrokes -- if nothing happens before the summer transfer window closes.
