United States Senator Tammy Baldwin initially realized what she could aspire to while watching Geraldine Ferraro accept the Democratic vice presidential nomination--a first for women. Since, Baldwin has been a trailblazer in her own own right as a woman and openly gay politician.

Tammy Baldwin was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2012, becoming the first openly gay U.S. Senator and first female Senator from Wisconsin. A Smith College alumni, her public service career began in 1986 at the age of 24 when she was elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors, representing Madison's downtown area.
