There are good, decent and honest people in the world. And there are even good, decent and honest people in the world of "Catfish: The TV Show!" Jesse had been in an online relationship with a guy named Brian for about three years. Despite the fact that he refused to video chat with her -- and the one time they were going to meet, Brian said he got in trouble with the police -- Jesse was still planning to marry him.
Of course, all of this threw up some major red flags, so the "Catfish" team came in to investigate. It turns out that Brian's story checked out. He was who he claimed to be, including that arrest for having a sawed-off rifle. The gun is classified as a "weapon of mass destruction" in North Carolina. Luckily for Brian, he was never charged with a crime.
Once the couple did finally meet, it looked like happily ever after was just around the corner.
“[I] just want to be with you, just want to be happy," Jesse told Brian as they embraced.
“I’m just glad you’re here and I do want to give this a shot," Brian said. The couple exchanged declarations of love and shared a kiss. It was all probably quite shocking for Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, who are used to uncomfortable encounters and confrontations about deception.
Things fell apart after that, though. Jesse admitted to Nev and Max that she and Brian slept together after that first meeting. And, in fact, that seemed to be the catalyst for everything to fall apart. After filming ended, Jesse visited Brian for two days and things did not go well. She decided they weren't meant for one another after all, and they haven't spoken since.
Writing for MTV's Remote Control, Kristina Lucarelli wondered if the couple moved too quickly. "It got us thinking...maybe there's some merit to the three-date rule?" she wrote. "Had the two not done the deed so early on, perhaps that final element of mystery would have given them something to look forward to. Or maybe they just weren't right for each other, and sex had nothing to do with it.”
