'Elysium' Space Station Could Be Possible One Day, Experts Say (VIDEO)

WATCH: New Sci-Fi Flick's Space Station May Actually Be Possible

The science fiction blockbuster film "Elysium" features a massive, futuristic space station serving as an oasis for humanity. It sounds exotic, but the space station's design and science is possible.

A panel of guests recently on HuffPost Live discussed how feasible building an "Elysium"-like station would be.

Andrew Rader, who holds a PhD in aerospace engineering from MIT, said that it's a lot easier to travel to a planet than to build a station like the one in "Elysium," but that doesn't mean it couldn't be done.

He said if it were built to hold 1 percent of the Earth's population, that might cost about 50 years of the total global product. But if it were designed just to hold the world's top 850 billionaires, it might actually be possible with modest investment over the next 100 years.
