Who Needs 'It Girls' When You Have Joan Jett and Lou Reed? Not Saint Laurent (PHOTOS)

Who Needs 'It Girls' When You Have Joan Jett and Lou Reed?

The moment Hedi Slimane took the creative reins at Yves Saint Laurent -- excuse us, Saint Laurent -- he made it quite clear that there would be no new "it girl." Rather than looking for the next big thing, the designer has kept his gaze turned staunchly to the past when it comes to muses.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Slimane's latest photoshoot for V Magazine's September issue. The French photographer lensed a rock'n roll feature for the glossy, shooting stark, pensive headshots of music icons Joan Jett, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Michael Gira and David Johansen.

Classic Hedi, no? For Saint Larent's recent ad campaign, the brand's creative director cast the likes of Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson and Kim Gordon, as opposed to trendy models like Cara Delevingne or Karlie Kloss. For such an of-the-moment guy, Slimane has gone against the grain by choosing old over new -- his subjects are iconic, grungy figures, the antithesis of "it girls."

In an industry where '90s supermodels are the closest things to "vintage" throwbacks, we think Slimane's take is actually pretty refreshing. See his recent shoot below and click over to VMagazine.com for more photos and the accompanying feature.

Are you into Slimane's aesthetic?
