In an up-close interview with Ocean Drive magazine, Gloria Estefan reveals that her signature song in her new “The Standards” album came to her in the shower.
She recounts that at 2 a.m. she stepped in the shower and words for “The Day You Say You Love Me”– an English version to iconic tango artist Carlos Gardel’s “El dia que me quieras”– “came into my head.”
“I was hanging out of the shower, dripping on a piece of paper writing this down,” Estefan tells the Miami-based magazine about the song that is also her wedding song.
“I had been thinking for weeks in my head about the hook of the song, and then one night it just all poured out.”
Estefan graces the cover of Ocean Drive’s September 2013 Fall Fashion issue, wearing a red silk chiffon gown by Gustavo Cadile and a Serpenti diamond necklace and bracelet.
The Cuban-American singer is set to release her long awaited “The Standards” album on September 10 and will open the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music’s Festival Miami concert series with her new album.
“This genre really is the first music that I ever listened to in my life and is something that I’ve sung forever. I had the opportunity with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to do tracks on their duet albums, but I always wanted to do a standards record of my own,” said the 55-year-old singer.
She also opened up about her 34-year marriage to Emilio Estefan, who is also her manager.
“Emilio and I have in our relationship certain things that really make this work: Number one, there are no egos involved. We’re very different personality-wise, but in the things that count—values, morals, business—we rarely disagree. But I wouldn’t tell everyone, ‘Hey, do this,’ because it’s tough. You have to learn where the manager stops and my husband begins.”
