Clay Matthews Late Hit On Colin Kaepernick Sparks Scuffle On Sidelines (VIDEO)

Green Bay's Clay Matthews sparked a sideline shoving match on Sunday after delivering a late, flying tackle of San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the second quarter.

With the 49ers facing 3rd and six just 10 yards away from the end zone, Kaepernick scrambled to his left and ran out of bounds on the right side a yard short of converting the first down. Matthews dove and wrapped Kaepernick after he stepped out of bounds, slamming him to the ground. San Francisco offensive lineman Joe Staley rushed over to retaliate, causing a scuffle out of bounds.

The officials called a personal foul on Matthews and penalized Staley for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in offsetting penalties and no play.

Days before their Week 1 meeting, Matthews spoke to local media about hitting the quarterback who is running the read option.

"It looks as if as long as that quarterback is carrying out that fake, he loses his right as a pocket passer and rules that govern that," Matthews said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "We'll see the hits that are legal and what's not legal, but we think our game plan fits within the scheme of the officials and what we want to do."

Now Matthews knows that the hit on Kaepernick is certainly not legal.
