The good news: The unemployment rate for older workers is dropping. According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it now stands at 5% for age 55-plus, and 5.7% for Americans between 45 and 54.

The bad news: Studies show that when Boomers lose their jobs, they remain unemployed longer than younger workers, and frequently come back at fractions of their former salaries.
