John Liu, the New York City comptroller, lost his bid for New York City mayor on Tuesday, coming in at fourth place in the Democratic primary.

Liu's campaign had long been plagued by poor polling numbers and in August, received a critical blow when the New York City Campaign Finance Board denied him public matching funds, citing a federal investigation into Liu's fundraising efforts.

Although he was never charged, the scandal was thought to have hurt his campaign.
