Top Latino Leaders In The United States

Hispanic Heritage Month is a perfect time to ask a still unanswered question: who is the closest thing we’ve got to a national Latino leader?

The Pew Hispanic Trends Project posed the question three years ago. “Don’t know” emerged victorious, with a whopping 64 percent, followed by “no one” at 10 percent. The first actual person to appear was Sonia Sotomayor, with 7 percent.

We’re removing “don’t know” from the equation, offering up 16 of the most prominent Latino political names in the country for your consideration. Who is the most influential? The most important? Who is the greatest national leader? Who has a chance of becoming president? Who makes us most proud? Who is the most popular or prestigious?

The list includes five women, 11 men, nine Democrats and seven Republicans, from a variety of elected and appointed offices.
