NCCU Shooting: Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Gunman Near North Carolina College Campus

Suspected Gunman Shot, Killed Near N.C. Campus

Campus police at North Carolina Central University in Durham shot and killed a man near the school grounds last night, WFMY News 2 reported.

The school was placed on lockdown around 10:15 p.m. Monday after authorities received reports of shots being fired.

When the officers found the suspect near the southeast part of the campus, he allegedly threatened them with a handgun. In response, the officers opened fire, NCCU Police Chief Tim Bellamy said.

The identity of the alleged gunman has not been released; however, police say he was not a student at NCCU.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation. Three officers have been placed on administrative leave, WNCN reported.

The school's lockdown order was lifted early Tuesday. Some classes will be rescheduled and/or relocated.

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified the gunman as Derek Deandre Walker, who was killed on September 17.
