Germany's Duesseldorf Airport Shut Down After Police Find Abandoned Drug Suitcase

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN -- BERLIN (AP) — German police say an abandoned suitcase that prompted authorities to shut down Duesseldorf airport for three hours turned out to contain drugs.

Authorities evacuated the airport building Tuesday evening after the suitcase was found at a counter in the departure area. Seventy flights were canceled and 21 diverted to nearby Cologne-Bonn while experts examined it.

Duesseldorf police said Wednesday the suitcase contained three packets of synthetic drugs, possibly amphetamines, weighing 6.6 pounds (3 kilograms) each.

They say it's unclear who left the suitcase at the airport.
