Robert De Niro To Replace James Gandolfini In 'Criminal Justice'

Posted: Updated:

Robert De Niro is officially set to take on James Gandolfini's role in "Criminal Justice," according to Deadline.

Although the network was initially unsure about whether or not it would continue with the series, it will now air as a seven-hour miniseries with De Niro taking over the role. Gandolfini will stay on as executive producer posthumously.

"Criminal Justice" centers on a New York City attorney, originally played by Gandolfini, who takes on a case revolving around a Pakistani man accused of murdering a girl on the Upper West Side.

"Jim's passing took the wind out of our sails quite a bit," HBO president Michael Lombardo said of "Criminal Justice" in July, adding, "That [pilot] was just the beginning of the journey ... the conversation would be about reshooting the portion Jim had already performed in and recasting going forward."
