CNN Guest Host Brian Stelter Criticizes Network Over Newt Gingrich Ethics Rules (VIDEO)

CNN was rapped on the knuckles on its own network on Sunday for its heavily criticized ethics rules for Newt Gingrich and his fellow "Crossfire" hosts.

"Reliable Sources" guest host Brian Stelter covered the controversy surrounding CNN's admission that Gingrich and others are allowed to contribute financially to guests and not disclose this to viewers.

CNN said that audiences already know about Gingrich's political views, so there is no need for disclosure. Many found this a dubious justification, and took CNN to task for apparently altering its policies, since its ethics chief had earlier said, "disclosure is important."

Stelter, who also covers media for the New York Times, did not side with CNN.

"To be fair, Newt Gingrich is not a reporter, that's true," he said. "And 'Crossfire' is not a news show. That's true, too. But it's on a news network, where the standards are high and the employees strive for excellence. So you, the viewer, should know what Gingrich and Stephanie Cutter and Van Jones and S.E. Cupp are up to, just like you should know what Sean Hannity is up to. CNN can do better than this. It can start by debating this very issue of disclosure on 'Crossfire.'"
