Joana Palhares and Yunka Mihura Arrested For Kissing At Brazilian Evangelical Event

WATCH: Why This Kiss Got These Women Thrown In Jail

Two women were reportedly arrested, jailed and publicly shamed after kissing at an evangelical event in Brazil earlier this month.

Brazilian congressman and pastor Marco Feliciano halted his presentation after Joana Palhares and Yunka Mihura began kissing, asking municipal guards and military police officials to arrest the pair, according to translated reports on PRI and Opposing Views.

"Those two girls have to leave here handcuffed," Feliciano is quoted by Global Voices Online as saying before the crowd of 70,000. "No use trying to run, guards are headed there now. This here isn't palace where anything goes -- it’s the house of God.”

Palhares and Mihura also claim that they were physically assaulted by police following their arrest and incarceration at the First District Police Station of São Sebastião. The women also allege that many heterosexual couples around them were exchanging kisses at the event.

"We see it as a situation that got completely out of control," stated Daniel Galani, the lawyer for the two women. "We know there are two rights in conflict: one is the freedom of expression and the other the freedom of religious practice. The two rights are constitutional and are prescribed so that people can make use of them."

Check out the video above -- the kiss happens right after the 4:20 mark.
