What happens when a beluga whale mates with a narwhal? Or when polar and grizzly bears have cubs?
Pittsburgh-based artist Nickolay Lamm has created illustrations of these and other hybrid offspring based on a 2010 paper published in the journal Nature. The paper listed inter-species hybridizations that we might see more of in the so-called Arctic "melting pot."
"Elin Pierce, a writer and editor with a Ph.D. in biology, helped to hypothesize what features the hybrid animals would have, based on dominant features of the original two species, and any descriptions or photos of those hybrids that already exist in the wild," Lamm told The Huffington Post in an email.
Lamm collaborated with Business Insider on this project.
