Most Americans Disapprove Of Shutting Down The Government Over Obamacare: Poll

A wide majority of Americans disapprove of shutting down the government over the Affordable Care Act, according to a CBS News poll released Thursday.

Seventy-two percent of respondents overall disapprove, including 76 percent of independents and 49 percent of Republicans. Even among respondents who disapprove of the president's health care law, 59 percent disapprove of shutting down the government to force changes to it. More Americans blame Republicans for the shutdown than blame President Barack Obama and the Democrats, by a margin of 44 to 35 percent. Seventeen percent blame both parties.

The poll is yet another indication that the shutdown is bad politics for the Republicans, and more significantly, could alienate even those who support the Republicans' underlying position on the health care law. A CNN poll released on Monday before the shutdown began showed that Republicans would get most of the blame, and a wide majority of Americans saw the GOP as acting like "spoiled children."

Despite the polls, the shutdown shows no signs of ending. By HuffPost's count, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) currently has the votes to pass a "clean" continuing resolution to fund the government, but he would be relying in large part on Democrats to pass it.
