'Sherlock' Stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman Already Want Season 4

Season 3 hasn't even aired yet, but if the stars of "Sherlock" have their way a fourth season would not be far behind, according to Radio Times.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the hit modern-day retelling of "Sherlock," have already decided to sign on for Season 4 before the BBC has even commissioned the season.

Steven Moffat, the creator of "Sherlock," told Radio Times at the Cheltenham Literature Festival: "We had to inform the BBC that Martin and Benedict had commissioned a new series." Moffat continued: "They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on -- so that’s good. Benedict, at some red carpet event somewhere, said he was carrying on forever. Martin, at another one, said, ‘Yep, series four is happening.’"

Great news for dedicated fans of the detective who were afraid that any further seasons of the series would just be wishful thinking. Viewers have patiently been waiting for Season 3 for almost two years since the cliffhanger ending of the second season. Fans were given a brief glimpse at the third season when the BBC aired a thirty-second preview back in the spring.

The "Sherlock" news comes after Moffat sparked rumors of another popular BBC series he executive produces, "Doctor Who." Moffat also hinted at the Cheltenham Literature Festival Moffat that Whovians may have overlooked some crucial information regarding the Doctor's upcoming regeneration which should be his last according to the series' mythology.

A premiere date for "Sherlock" Season 3 has not been announced.
